October 24th - October 28th

This week we added Wordwork and Listening to Reading to Daily 5. Students also started choosing their own cycles. We are getting a lot accomplished during this time to help improve our reading and writing. The comprehension strategy we have been focusing on this week is Making Connections. When you read with your child you may notice him/her talking about connections that they have made while reading.

On Wednesday we were very lucky to have Barbara Reid come visit. She is the author and illustrator of many fabulous books. We will continue to look at her work in November.

In theme, we are continuing to learn about different ways we can be caring. We read the story called " Have You Filled A Bucket Today?". You might hear your child talking about ways they can be bucket fillers. We also started to talk about kindness and what it means to be kind. We made a classroom kindness quilt that we will be displaying in the hallway.

The week ended with a great Halloween dance. Hallie also brought in some birthday cupcakes for the kids to enjoy. Hopefully they didn't come home too hyper! I'm sure they will all be excited on Monday!

October 17th - October 21st

This week Ms. Scherle wrapped up the Liquids and Solids unit by making ice cream with the class. They loved the experience and many thought it was "awesome" and "cool"!

Ms. Scherle's new theme is Kids Who Care. The class will be doing many activities about caring for themselves and others. This is a great way to strengthen our classroom community.

In math we have started a new unit on Addition and Subtraction to 18. We will be doing some work on the computers next week in math too!

This week we had a Wellness afternoon. Students came out from the U of R and did stations with the grades K-4 classes. They had many exciting stations about health including poison safety, germs, self-esteem, manners, and working together.

Reading assessments are now complete. You may have heard your child tell you what level he/she is at. They are all very excited to continue to show growth as a reader. Keep reading at home!

This week we completed our very first paragraph! These are hanging in front of our classroom. We will continue working on paragraph writing this term.

Thank you to Armaan for the Fun Friday treat!

Check the school website for more information regarding your child!

Please put the word "Caring" in the agenda after you have read this.

October 11th - October 14th

This week we had a great trip to the Science Centre. Thank you to all of the parent volunteers who took time out of their busy schedules to help. The small groups gave the kids more of a chance to explore. We attended a workshop about matter in the Science Centre lab. We also watched a show about solids, liquids, and gases. The students loved the liquid nitrogen.

In science this week the students learned about buoyancy. The worked cooperatively to build boats out of certain materials. They then had the chance to float their boats to see how many pennies they could hold. One boat held 158 pennies. It was so exciting!!

We have been working on assessing the students reading. Please continue to read and write at home often.

Next week we will work on paragraph writing and wrap up our Liquid and Solids unit.

In math we are moving onto the next unit: Addition and Subtraction to 18. You can work on or review these facts with your child at home.

Please check the school website for more information about school activities that are coming up.

Please write the word "library" in the agenda once you have read this message.
