March 23-27

It was so nice to see you all at the conferences last week!  There were many celebrations to share and discuss.  I'm sure that everyone will work hard and show even more growth and progress in term 3!

We have had a busy week in our classroom.  We started the week off with a storyteller named Bonnie Logan.  She told the kids many stories and she even brought out her banjo!  What a treat!

Our Force and Motion unit is well underway.  We have explored slopes using race cars.   We've used marbles and discussed friction.  We made pinwheels and went on a motion bubble gum walk around the neighbourhood.  It is amazing to discover force and motion all around us in the world!

As part of the measurement unit in grade 2, students need to know the days of the weeks and months of the years.  Please have your child practice spelling these at home!

Upcoming dates and events:
April: Nutrition Unit (recipe assignment will be sent home next week and posted on the blog)

March 12 - March 16

Hello Grade 2 Families!

Report cards are being sent out today and I am very pleased with the growth and progress made by our grade 2 students.  I have been very sick these last two weeks so I apologize if there are any errors on the report cards!  They have been proof read over and over but I'm sure someone may find something!

This week we had a great Train Your Brain session with Ms. Thomas.   We watched a video and learned 8 ways to control anger.   Everything from breathing to telling an adult.  Next week we are going to be doing some teamwork activities.

We have been learning about position and we tried to create some upside down drawings.  It was fun to overcome some obstacles and we can't imagine having to paint a whole ceiling like Michael Angelo.

We had some balloon fun while learning about force.  We used the air from balloons to try and knock over as many cups as we could.   This is a fun activity to try at home too!

Next week:
No School on Friday March 23rd - 3 Way Conferences! Please return the blue note to let me know if you are able to attend.

Here are a few quick pictures I took of our upside down drawing and our balloon fun.

Feb 27 - Mar 2

This week we started our new unit on Motion and Relative Position.  We explored position words and practiced writing them by making a Wordle.  You can explore the website here. Our Wordles will be displayed outside our classroom.   Next week we will be learning about pushes and pulls.  I may be asking your child to bring some toy cars from home this week if he/she has some.

I came across a roller coaster website and the kids were so excited that I posted the link so that they could explore it at home.   Here is the link again: http://dep.disney.go.com/sodi_app/index.html?st=2

In  math we have completed the unit on Patterning!  This was a quick and easy unit for the students.  My math group has started the unit on Data Analysis and Mrs. Gilroy-Beck's math group is working on Measurement.

In Language Arts we have been busy studying "tion" words.  Our list is almost at 50 words!  Keep them coming!  This week we learned all about making inferences when reading.  An inference is a kind of guess.  When we read a story it does not tell every detail about every subject so good readers need to think about the information and make inferences using the facts that are given.  We will continue to work on inferring for the month of March.

March is also Nutrition Month.  We will be discussing healthy food choices in the classroom and I will even be sending some homework home!

Some upcoming dates:
March 8th and 9th - No School for students
March 16th - Report Cards
March 23th - 3 Way Conferences
