April 23 - April 27

We started the week off with our bowling field trip.  It was great to start the week off with such an exciting field trip.  Force was needed to get those bowls down the lanes.  Make sure to check out the pictures in my last post.   Thank you again to Ethan's mom and Hallie's Baba for helping us out.

On Monday we did a school yard clean up for Earth Day.  It was pretty hot outside and we managed to pick up a lot of garbage!

Ms.Thomas came in this week and taught us even more about the brain.  We learned about how breathing and thinking happy thoughts, can help us to bring our stress levels down.  She had us do a breathing exercise on the floor too.

In Language Arts we have finished our Predicting and Inferring booklets.  We are learning about Main Ideas and Supporting Details.   In May, I will begin my final reading assessments on the students!  I'm excited to see the growth and progress!

My math group is working on a Measurement unit.  So far we have measured length, height, and distance around.  We are currently working on measuring mass.
Mrs. Gilroy-Beck's math group has just started a Data Analysis unit.

Our first Restaurant Day will be on Thursday May 3rd.  Your child will not need to bring a lunch on this day.   The first group has named their restaurant Food Palace and they will serve chicken noodle soup, alphabet soup, ham sandwiches, grilled cheese sandwiches, berry smoothies, and banana smoothies.   There is a lot of excitement surrounding this unit.  Group one has worked very well together to make decisions and they have been extremely productive.    I will post pictures of their work so that you can all see what they have done with their signs and menus.

Both Literacy Lunches were a hit! There was a lot of great conversations about books and it was great to hear.  Stay tuned for those pictures.

Upcoming Events:
May 3rd: Group One: Restaurant Day
May 4th: No school
May 7th: Music Monday assembly
May 9th: Grade 2 author visit and Group Two Restaurant Day

Restaurant Days!

We are learning all about healthy eating and nutrition.  The students have decided that they wanted to set up a restaurant and serve real food.  They are still in the early stages of planning but I wanted to give you some of the details that we have so far.

There are 8 children in each group and there are 3 groups.  They are responsible for planning a healthy meal, using all four food groups, to serve to the class.  They will need to come up with a menu and restaurant name.  They will be in charge of bringing and preparing the food, setting up, serving, and clean up.  The planning will all be done at school but we need you to take your child shopping for a few groceries near their assigned date.  Your child will not need to bring a lunch on Restaurant Day since we will be having lunch in the classroom.

Some ideas have been: a soup and grilled cheese restaurant, pizza restaurant, taco restaurant, and sandwich and smoothie shop.

We are trying to keep it simple and still have fun!  The children are all very excited about it and have many ideas to share.  They are learning how to work cooperatively in a group which is a very useful skill!

Restaurant Days and groups are:
Group 1: May 3rd:  Grady, Maguire, Akshan, Armaan, Declan, Kade, Karson, Isaac,
Group 2: May 9th: Heather, Ally, Hallie, Brodie, Brighton, Zoe S., Emily, Aspen,
Group 3: May 16th: Ethan, Rheanna, Zoe B., Hee Joo, Chira, Kayin, Braxton, Connor,

Please email or send a note if you have any questions or concerns regarding Restaurant Days!

Ladies Literacy Lunch

I would like to invite the girls in grade 2 to a Ladies Literacy Lunch on Wednesday April 25th, 2012.  If your daughter would like to attend this event, please have her bring a brown bag (non -microwavable) lunch and her favourite children’s book, chapter book or magazine.   We will eat together and talk about why they like the book they brought.  It is my hope that their excitement will encourage others to try a new book, author, or series that might appeal to them.  I will supply some healthy snacks and dessert.  The girls will be given a brand new book to add to their home library.  This event is free and completely voluntary.
