We have been studying contractions.  We have been busy making a contraction booklet that your child will share with you next week.  Point out contractions when you are reading with your child at home!

This week we did can experiment called the Shaving Cream Debate.  We tried to figure out if shaving cream is a liquid, solid, or gas. Here were some thoughts:

"It is a solid because a liquid drips from your hand.  Solids don't."
"It's a liquids because it takes the shape of a container."
"I think it is a solid because if you leave it over night it hardens"

Upcoming Dates:
Monday April 29th: RETURN YOUR READ-A-THON forms today!
Friday May 3rd: Read -a-thon celebration and Freezie Friday.

We had the chance to see Fred Penner on Friday.  It was a great performance and the kids had a blast.  Most enjoyed the song Sandwiches the best.

The tragedy in Boston has left some kids asking questions and talking in our classroom.  Here is a link to an article that discusses talking about the situation.

The Celebration of Learning is a demonstration conference where students have the opportunity to share their expertise in several subject areas with their parents.  Our classroom will be set up with various stations that both the students and parents work through together.
Your child will lead their conference and direct you through each station.  Parents will have the opportunity to see firsthand the areas of study that we are working on and the strengths of their child.
Throughout this demonstration conference time I will be available to answer any questions that you may have.
I hope you enjoy our Celebration of Learning!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Sanchuck

Our week started off with a Cool Kids Who care presentation.  The presenter did some magic tricks while explaining that cool kids care and don't bully.

Feb 19 - Feb 22

This week we worked on addition and subtraction mysteries in math.  For example, ___+ 3 = 10 and 15 - ___ =7.  You can continue to work on these at home with your child.  Some use numberlines and counters to help them, others have their own mental math strategies that they use.

Our community project is still a hot topic in our room.  There has been talk about making some gift baskets to raffle.  Stay tuned for details.  We created a collection jug for students at the school to add some spare change.  Thank you to the Price family for donating the jug!

We started to make a community book that shows us our community, city, province and country.  I put a few pictures of the school on the data projector and they drew their own.  Everyone did an amazing job!  Here are a few examples.

Here are some pictures of our toothpick art from last week.

February 11th - 15th

We have had a very exciting week in our class.  The highlight has been our candy guess.  Everyone worked two recesses and it was a fabulous learning experience. The candy guess raised $296.70.  We are not sure how we got this total since every guess was 50 cents! Kayen has donated $20, Matthew has donated $40 and Mr. MacKenzie gave us $20 for this project.  In total we have raised $376.70 for the splash park in our community.  We have learned so much from this project...everything from advertising to counting coins!  Thank you to everyone that sent candy and thank you to the Price family who sent some money for supplies for future fundraisers!  Stay tuned for our next great idea!  Today there was talk of pizza sales, burger sales, lemonade sales, Easter baskets, jellybean candy guess, freezie sales, TCBY sales, and of course the talent show! Your children are full of ideas! They think big and that is awesome!

It was the 100th day of school on February 12th.  Stay tuned for pictures of our toothpick art!

There is no school on Monday February 18th.  Have a memorable family weekend and I look forward to hearing about it on Tuesday!

Our trip to Boggy Creek was an adventure indeed!  There was a ton of snow to hike through.  Our guide did a science experiment with us using pretend mice.  We gathered wood and built a fire for lunch.  We played a game called "Chuck the Chicken".  We attempted to climb and large snow hill too.  Thank you to our parent helpers for coming on the field trip!
