This week we worked on addition and subtraction mysteries in math. For example, ___+ 3 = 10 and 15 - ___ =7. You can continue to work on these at home with your child. Some use numberlines and counters to help them, others have their own mental math strategies that they use.
Our community project is still a hot topic in our room. There has been talk about making some gift baskets to raffle. Stay tuned for details. We created a collection jug for students at the school to add some spare change. Thank you to the Price family for donating the jug!
We started to make a community book that shows us our community, city, province and country. I put a few pictures of the school on the data projector and they drew their own. Everyone did an amazing job! Here are a few examples.
Here are some pictures of our toothpick art from last week.

February 11th - 15th
We have had a very exciting week in our class. The highlight has
been our candy guess. Everyone worked two recesses and it was a
fabulous learning experience. The candy guess raised $296.70. We are
not sure how we got this total since every guess was 50 cents! Kayen has
donated $20, Matthew has donated $40 and Mr. MacKenzie gave us $20 for
this project. In total we have raised $376.70 for the splash park in
our community. We have learned so much from this project...everything
from advertising to counting coins! Thank you to everyone that sent
candy and thank you to the Price family who sent some money for supplies
for future fundraisers! Stay tuned for our next great idea! Today
there was talk of pizza sales, burger sales, lemonade sales, Easter
baskets, jellybean candy guess, freezie sales, TCBY sales, and of course
the talent show! Your children are full of ideas! They think big and that is awesome!
It was the 100th day of school on February 12th. Stay tuned for pictures of our toothpick art!
There is no school on Monday February 18th. Have a memorable family weekend and I look forward to hearing about it on Tuesday!

Feb 4th - Feb 8th
I just wanted to thank all of the families that sent candy for our candy guess next week. Everyone is very excited about our first fundraiser. Here we are making signs to advertise our sale!
Our trip to Boggy Creek was an adventure indeed! There was a ton of snow to hike through. Our guide did a science experiment with us using pretend mice. We gathered wood and built a fire for lunch. We played a game called "Chuck the Chicken". We attempted to climb and large snow hill too. Thank you to our parent helpers for coming on the field trip!
Next week we will be celebrating the 100th day of school. Please return your 100 day homework bottle by February 11th.
February 12th: 100th Day of School and book orders are due.
Valentines Day is on February 14th: A list of names was sent home with your child.
No School on February 18th: Family Day

January 28th - February 1
What a week we have had! Lots of indoor recesses and energetic kids!
This week we talked about kindness in the community. Part of this lead to a discussion about the spray park that is being built in our area. I have been having discussions with some other grade 2 teachers in the community and we have decided to work together to try and raise money to enhance our community. Everyone is getting involved and excited about this project, even Mr. MacKenzie!! Your kids have come up with some great ideas including having a talent show to showcase their many talents, everything from drumming to roping. They have talked about having sales of every kind. A note was sent home today regarding our first fundraiser. I will attach it at the bottom of this blog!
It just happened that our student council planned a FUN IN THE SUN day so we decided to make a video asking the other grade 2 classes in the community to join us. Hawrylak and WF Ready grade 2 classes are already on board.
Check out the cute video! We had made one in the morning and Mr. MacKenzie came to see it. They wanted to do another one with Mr. MacKenzie. It is not perfect but it is priceless!
Keep your eyes on this blog to see what the grade 2 students in the community are doing!

Here is a copy of the parent letter that came home today:
Dear Parents,
We are beginning a new unit in Social Studies, In this unit Grade 2 students will explore the meaning of community. The aim of social studies education is to help students develop values, attitudes, knowledge, understanding, skills and processes necessary to become active and responsible citizens. It is also to help them become engaged in democratic ideas and develop an awareness of their capacity to effect change as responsible citizens.
We would like to give the students in Grade 2 an authentic opportunity to see how they can get involved and make a difference in their own community. After several discussions with our classes one project that came up was the Arcola East Spray Park. The spray park is a place that all citizens within the community can use and enjoy. We have begun to talk about the work that needs to be done and how we can contribute to the development of this project. We are exploring the main issue at the moment, which is the funding that needs to be raised. The students have come up with several ideas about how we can raise money as a school.
Thank you for your continued support!
