February 13th -February 17th

This week we have been writing all about our trip to Boggy Creek.   We decided to create a Voicethread so that you can see and hear all about it!  Click here to check it out!

Ms. Thomas came into our room on Monday to teach us all about turtle tricks.  She discussed taking deep breathes, counting, and finding a person to talk to if we are frustrated.  Everyone made a turtle with their own individual plan on the back.

On Tuesday we made some handprint Valentines that were absolutely adorable.  I loved reading all of the messages that they students wrote to you!  I hope that you enjoyed them too!  We had a dance in the afternoon as well.   What a great day!

On Thursday we went to the Sunrise Library for an author visit.   Carol Morin drummed and sang for us.  She also showed us her beautiful paintings that went along with her story called ``Kookum`s Tablecloth. It was a wonderful cultural experience with many important messages.

We have almost completed our unit on Patterning and we will be starting a new unit after the break.   Mrs. Gilroy-Beck`s math group will be working on Measurement and my math group will be working on Data Analysis.

I hope that you have a fabulous break with your family!  See you on February 27th!  Keep blogging and visiting RAZ kids over the break!

Dear Grade 2 Families,

We have had a very exciting week in grade 2!

On Monday we had our Train Your Brain session with Ms.Thomas and Ms. Gibbs. Today's session included a visit from a real turtle! We are learning many turtle tricks to help us train our brains. We have been working hard at full body listening in the classroom!

On Tuesday we went on our outdoor adventure! I want to extend a huge THANK YOU to our 8 parent volunteers who joined us. It was so nice to have you come on our trip and help out. We all appreciate it very much. We did many fun and interesting things on our trip. I'm not going to blog to you about it, instead we are going to make a Voicethread all about it and share it with you! We are hoping to have this done by next Friday!

This week we have spend a lot of time on the computers learning how to blog and how to use RAZ kids. I hope that everyone feels comfortable logging in at school and at home. Please let me know if you are having any issues.

RAZ Kids

As you may have heard, we have started RAZ kids in our classroom!!

RAZ kids is an online reading program that your child can access wherever there is an Internet connection. They can listen to a story, read a story and then fill out a quiz about the story. I have put each individual child at their instructional level. As they complete each level they will get moved up to the next level. Your child earns stars for completing the activities. They can go to the Raz Rocket to spend their stars!!

We will be using RAZ kids as part of out Listening to Reading cycle during Daily 5. I encourage you to use it at home as well! I sent home a card today with their login information.

We've talked about how blogging helps us work on our writing and RAZ kids helps with our reading. They seem to be excited about both!!

Please email me if you have any questions or concerns!

I hope that you enjoy RAZ kids!

Blogging

Here is a video with blogging instructions in case your child wants to blog at home. Students are so excited to blog at home but they may forget a step or two. This video may help them remember how to blog. They will get the hang of it once they do it a few times! We will be blogging weekly in the classroom. Feel free to check out the blogs and leave comments! Blogging is a way for students to practice their writing and they have a larger audience too!

Our Outdoor Adventure is still scheduled for Tuesday February 7th. We will leave the school at 10:30 and we will be back around 3:00. Thank you to all of the parent volunteers who are able to join us.

The students have been busy writing this week in their journals and in our Friendship books. A Friendship book is where each student writes a few sentences about a memory that they shared with a friend or something positive about them. This week we wrote about Akshan and Karson. Everyone seems very excited about this project!

We started to study compound words this week. We are making a huge list in our classroom. We watched the compound word boogie to get us started! You can watch it here! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T0X7xMDXmc8

In math we are working on patterns. Some of the words that we have been learning are attribute, element, core, and repeat. We have been making 3-5 element patterns with repeating cores! Search at home to see what kinds of patterns you can find!

Next week:
- Book orders due on February 10th
- A list of names will be going in the agenda for your child to fill out Valentines if they choose.
- Start our Motion and Relative Position unit!!
- Students will get all set up to blog!!
