February 24th - February 28th

This week I started reading The One And Only Ivan to the class.  The story is written from the point of view of the gorilla who lives in a cage at the mall. Ask your child to tell you about the story so far!  Read aloud time is a special part of our day where the lights are turned off and everyone curls up, listens, and visualizes what is happening in the story.

As you probably know, we have had many indoor recesses this winter.  On Monday I brought in some new games from home.  I also brought in our school speed stack sets for our class.  We watched a "How To" video and our class was busy stacking during recess!  Your child is welcome to bring a game or activity from home to work on during indoor recess time.  Hopefully we won't be having many more!

When engaging in class discussions I find that kids often respond "Google it" when I ask them a question to get them to thinking.  This week we learned all about the Tree Octopus.  Ask your child to share what we learned in this lesson! The Internet can be a great place but we still have to use our common sense.  I will post the link to this website next week once we have discussed it with the students who have been away.

We were very fortunate to be able to attend a performance by Sask Express on Thursday.  They put on a wonderful show.

In Language Arts we are discussing fiction and non-fiction text.  We are working on our own reading goals.

In Math we are working on our Addition and Subtraction to 18 unit.  We came up with individualized math goals this week.  Ask your child what he/she is working on. We also learned about doubles this week.  Ask your child to name the double facts or sing you our Double It Up song!

In Science we are discussing what we think we know about snow.  We will be doing some snow experiments over the next couple of weeks to learn more!  Snow is a great material to use when learning about liquids and solids.

Thank you all for your support with the Telemiracle fundraiser.  Our school total should be posted soon!

February 10th - February 14th

Here is our heart art that we worked on last week.  Each heart is very unique and special!

Liam is working on drawing as part of his Genius Hour project.  We photocopied a page out of a drawing book on Friday and he worked with his grandma on this painting.  Way to go Liam and Grandma!

On Monday we celebrated the 100th Day of School!  We wrote and blogged "If I had 100 Minions For A Week".  You can check out those blogs and pictures here.  We also had some CREATION STATIONS and made different pictures and models using 100 items.   Here are a few snapshots!

We used an app called Oldster to show us what we would look like when we were 100 years old.  The kids thought this was very funny and they wanted me to share them on our blog with you!

On Valentines Day some of our parents put on a wonderful party for our class.  We did a craft, cookie decorating, story time and we even had a pinata! There were tons of yummy snacks and we ended with a dance party lead by Amanda.   These parents know how to put on a party!

Here are a few pictures from our party.  Thank you Amanda, Sarah, Cindy, and Jennifer for organizing and helping out.  Also, thank you for the lovely flowers and notes for Teacher Appreciation week!.

February 3rd - February 7th

This week we added a new piece of furniture to our classroom.   It is a very popular item and is getting lots of use.  Please let me know if you see anymore beanbag chairs like this when you are out shopping!  We could definitely use another one.

Our field trip was cancelled on Thursday so we had art afternoon instead.  We made some heart art that required patterning skills.  Here are a few pictures of our work.

On Friday our outdoor Olympic day was cancelled.  We blogged about the Olympics while we watched a bit of the opening ceremonies.  Kids responded to this prompt

"Imagine you are speaking to one of the Canadian Olympians and they are feeling a bit nervous. What would you tell them to help them perform at their best?"

Mr. Clarke read our blogs and even tweeted Aidan's post out!  Now everyone wants Mr. Clark to tweet out their blogs.  I told them he would probably do it again next week.  You should see the excitement and motivation to blog for a larger audience!  It is so exciting to see their eyes light up when they see comments from others.
