October 15th-19th

This week in math we worked on increasing patterns (growing patterns).

Here are some websites that you can work on with your child.   These sites will help you to check their understanding of increasing patterns.

How Does My Pattern Grow

What Comes Next

The comprehension reading strategy that we worked on this week was Questioning.   Good readers ask questions before, during, and after they read.    Here is a video that explains this strategy!

Questioning

Upcoming Events:
We have been given our Agribition date!!  We will be going on Friday November 23rd.  I am looking for 4-5 parent volunteers for this trip and so far I have 1.  Please let me know if you are able to help out and if you have your criminal record check completed.

The word to write in the agenda is "question".

Have a great weekend!

October 9th-12th

This week we had a visit from the Humane Society.  We learned about the importance of kindness to animals and the responsibilities of pet owners.

We also have some new pets in our classrooms! Ask your child to tell you about them!

We learned about the Visualizing reading strategy this week. This is where the reader puts pictures in their head when reading.  They see and think about the story like a movie going on in their head.  We will continue to work on this strategy next week.  Ask your child to describe their treehouse or Macaroni Monster to you!

We did some work with compound words this week.  See if your child can give you a few examples.  We watched the compound word boogie too! Here is a link to the catchy tune!

Next week:
-  Crafting Kindness for girls on Tuesday October 16th at lunch.

- We will be having a Wellness Morning on Friday October 19th.  Students from the U of R will be coming out to do stations with the students.

Please write the word FROGS in the agenda so that I know you have read this message!

October 1st -4th

We celebrated Mr. MacKenzie's 85th birthday this week!  The SCC hosted a spectacular pancake breakfast.  We had a fabulous assembly after too! Here are a few pictures!

In math we are still working on patterns.  This week we made patterns using Fruit Loops! What a fun activity!  You can practice making patterns at home with every day objects.

We got busy using RAZ kids this week.  Everyone is trying to become stronger readers by using their reading strategies when they read!

Thank you to Mrs. Franklin who joined us for some painting.  The kids worked hard on their gorgeous thankful books.  I hope that you enjoyed reading them too.

I have started to assess the students reading levels during Read to Self time.   Look how focused they are!!!

I am thankful to be at Jack MacKenzie school and work with such amazing students and families.  I hope that you enjoy your long weekend with your family!
