January 26th - January 30th

This week we received a response from our penpal letters!  Everyone was excited to see what their penpal wrote.  We spent some time writing back to our new friends.  We need to make sure our printing is neat so that our penpals won't have any trouble reading them!

We have been learning about retelling a story.  We have talked about the characters, setting, problem in the story and solution.  We have been creating iMovies to summarize and retell stories.

We wrapped up our Cardboard Challenge with a cardboard arcade on Thursday. What creative kids we have in grade 2!

Read-a-thon packets were sent home this week.  Please ensure that your child is reading as much as he/she can over the next few weeks!  We are also recording reading minutes in the classroom. Reading to raise money for a new playground structure is a win win situation!

Our Battle of the Books will take place this Friday February 6th! We have done a few practice battles and the kids want more!

Upcoming Dates:

  • Read -a- thon: January 27th - February 12th ~ Keep Reading!!
  • February  Break (No School)  ~ February  16th - 20th
  • February 9th ~ 100th Day of School (homework project coming home this week)
  • February 13th ~ Red, white, purple and pink day.  You may send Valentine cards on this day.  A class list will be coming home in the agenda.

January 19th - January 23rd

Our class has been composing a song in music with Mrs. Hinz.  This week I heard them in the hallway with their instruments.  Ask your child to sing you their song!

In math we are working on our Addition and Subtraction to 18 unit.  Please continue to practice math facts at home with your child.  We are also working on a unit called Data Analysis which is where we learn how to collect and sort information and create graphs.  Mrs. Lueken, a volunteer, has been joining us for our math groups this month.

Mrs. Wilkie read us a few stories that are nominated for the Willow Award. Our class will get the chance to vote on our favourite to decide the winner once we have heard them all!

On Friday we worked on something we called The Great Cardboard Challenge. Students were encouraged to create something made out of cardboard. We had some interesting creations and the kids had a blast! Many made arcade games and they want to have an arcade in the classroom. We will be adding a writing component to the The Great Cardboard Challenge next week! Here are some snapshots of the process with some of the final projects. A few students are still working on their projects.

What a fun (and messy!) morning we had!

January 12th - January 16th

We have been working hard this week in grade 2!  We worked on writing paragraphs by sorting sentences about a certain topic.  Everyone who was here this week has completed an excellent paragraph about our PWIM picture.

On Wednesday we experimented mixing root beer and ice cream together.  We could see all states of matter with this experiment.  Ask your child what the liquid, solid and gas were! We enjoyed drinking this yummy experiment after!

On Thursday we took our frozen water balloons out of the freezer and made snowmen.  As the day went on we recorded what was happening.  It was exciting to see the snowman change shape as the day went on. At the end of the day we put our snowmen in a pot and watched what happened!
