April 22nd - April 25th

We have been studying contractions.  We have been busy making a contraction booklet that your child will share with you next week.  Point out contractions when you are reading with your child at home!

This week we did can experiment called the Shaving Cream Debate.  We tried to figure out if shaving cream is a liquid, solid, or gas. Here were some thoughts:

"It is a solid because a liquid drips from your hand.  Solids don't."
"It's a liquids because it takes the shape of a container."
"I think it is a solid because if you leave it over night it hardens"

Upcoming Dates:
Monday April 29th: RETURN YOUR READ-A-THON forms today!
Friday May 3rd: Read -a-thon celebration and Freezie Friday.

The grade 2s will be selling freezies every Friday to raise money for the splash park.  Freezies will be $1.00 each.  If you would like to help with this project you can send a box of jumbo freezies to school.  We will be selling freezies on May 3rd, 10th, 24th, 31st, June 7th and 13th.

There will be a pancake breakfast on May 31st and all money raised will go towards the splash park!

April 15th - April 19th

This week we have started a unit on Data Analysis (graphing).  We will be working on this unit while we continue to work on an Addition and Subtraction unit to 100.  Here is a website that you can use to print off drill and practice worksheets if you are interested. http://www.math-drills.com/

We are going to be working on a our Liquids and Solids unit for the next 2 weeks and then we will start a unit on Nutrition.  With our nutrition unit comes some cooking which ties in nicely with Liquids and Solids!

Everyone has been sharing many wonderful stories about all of the reading they have been doing at home!  Keep it up grade 2! Please return reading logs and money on April 29th. We can't wait to see what our total will be!!  Stay tuned for details for our May fundraising idea!

We had the chance to see Fred Penner on Friday.  It was a great performance and the kids had a blast.  Most enjoyed the song Sandwiches the best.

The tragedy in Boston has left some kids asking questions and talking in our classroom.  Here is a link to an article that discusses talking about the situation.
