January 5th - January 9th

I hope that you had a memorable holiday with your families!  We are back in the swing of things in grade 2! It has been super cold out so we have had indoor recess all week!

We welcomed a new student on Monday!  We now have 25 students in our classroom (12 boys and 13 girls).

We have partnered up with another grade 2 class in the city and have been working on penpal letters. We can't wait to get our letters back and learn all about our penpals!

This week we worked on spelling commonly misspelled words.  Ask your child what 5 words he/she has been practicing.

Our class has decided to do a class version of Battle of the Books.  Students put themselves into groups and are reading certain books.  Once the books are read we will have a classroom battle against other teams answering questions about the books.  It is not an expectation that students read every single book.  Each group will need to ensure that at least one person in their group has read the book in order to be able to answer questions in the battle. (We have a chart set up and I will help them make this happen!).  Battle of the Books is a way to keep students motivated and excited about reading!! I will announce the battle date soon.  Here are the books that we are reading!

In Science we have started a unit on Liquids and Solids.  We have many experiments planned for this unit including making ice cream! Stay tuned for pictures!

Mr. Hollinger has been teaching students basketball this week. They have been practicing passing and dribbling. "Basketball is awesome and fun!" ~ Alec

Upcoming Dates:
Friday January 16th  - Book Orders Due

Please write this secret message in the agenda: BATTLE OF THE BOOKS
