October 13th - October 17th

We've started to pick our own Daily 5 cycles. We have started work work in our Daily 5 cycles.  We can use wiki sticks at word work.  We can use magnets to make words.  We can use the white board. We do word work to help us practice words.  Word work is awesome!

On Monday we did an OREO stacking challenge.  Surya got 28 OREOs stacked before it fell.  The whole class even got to eat some OREOs!  We made predictions about how many we could stack. We got two tries.

Our PWIM picture has a new title.  The new title is Leaf Throwers.

We have been learning about bats.  After we read some books we wrote what we were right about. If we had any new things that we learned we could write that down. Did you know that bat homes are called roosts?  Did you know that some bats eat bugs? Did you know a baby bat is called a pup?   Did you know a pup loses its teeth when it is 10 days old? Did you know that there are 1100 different kinds of bats? Did you know that bats can be black, brown or grey? Did you know bats use echolocation to find bugs?  Did you know that bats aren't blind?  Did you know that bats can hear one mile away? Did you know that baby bats make chirp sounds?  Did you know that bats are nocturnal?

We started reading a book called "and then it HAPPENED - book one". It is a very funny book and we really like it.

Upcoming Dates:
- We will be having a Halloween bake sale on Thursday October 23rd.  Money raised will be used for a Halloween integration afternoon on October 30th.  If you would like to donate any nut free baking (homemade or store bought), you can send it on Wednesday October 22nd!  Items will be sold for 50 cents or $1.00.
- Book orders will be sent home on Monday October 20th and due on October 27th.
- Picture retake day will be on October 29th in the morning.
- We will be having a Halloween dance on October 31st in the afternoon.  Kids can wear their costumes in the afternoon,
